With the help of an industry mentor at The North Face™️ two of my fellow student designers and I created the theoretical company "mülch," an outdoor apparel brand with a focus on gardening. We wanted to bring functionality to the world of gardening and encourage users to get outside. We created a three-look collection inspired by different phases of the gardening process: Tilling, Planting, and Harvesting. Each of the three looks reflects one of the three phases. Of the student designers, each of us designed one look, created the patterns for another, and constructed the third.
The Harvest Look
Designed for the harvest period of gardening, this look uses lightweight hemp-blend fabric to provide airflow for gardeners harvesting in direct sunlight. The fabric was hand-dyed using a variety of natural pigments as a sustainable alternative to chemical dyes. Storage space, breathability, and sun protection were the most important factors of this look. The side tie wrap top features a concealed pocket on the inner panel to keep items secure and slightly oversized, flowy sleeves to maximize airflow. The midi-skirt has a drawstring closure at the waist and two cinching cords on each side of the bottom to adjust hem length. The skirt has 6 pockets in total to store freshly picked fruits and veggies.

The Tilling Jacket
Designed for the tilling phase of gardening, this rain slick is made from sustainable waxed canvas and features a drawstring around the bottom hem to adjust for fit and a lace-up detail at the neck. Movement and protection from rain were the most important needs for this look. The boxy silhouette allows the wearer room to move around and the organic waxed cotton provides a natural alternative to synthetic water-resistant fabrics.

The Planting Look
For the planting look, durability and storage were the two most important aspects for the gardening stage that requires crouching, kneeling, and digging. The wrap jacket, made of organic canvas, features a front pocket, elbow patches, and decorative bias tape. The double-knee pants feature the same rounded patches as the jacket sleeves with reinforced stitching. The storage belt fits like a basic belt but features a snap-up-compartment that allows the gardener to store gloves or tools and access them again easily quickly.
